c.1250, from O.Fr. sacrifise (12c.), from L. sacrificium, from sacrificus "performing priestly functions or sacrifices," from sacra "sacred rites" (prop. neut. pl. of sacer "sacred," see sacred) + root of facere "to do, perform" (see factitious). L. sacrificium is glossed in O.E. by ansegdniss.

ReplyDeleteI'm sure sacrifice means different things between our cultures and others. The interesting bit comes when a person sacrifices one part of him/herself for another, a sort of meta-self-sacrifice. But then what happens if you have multiple personalities? Either way, great pic!
