It has all the melancholy of that William Carlos Williams poem about the paper bag. Stroke me particularly because it's papel picado, a traditional decorative/ritual custom in Mexico, especially during the Day of the Dead but also used in other festivities. I imagine this photo was taken somethere in the US, right? If so, I like the way such an act as papel picado can work as an act of memory, of becoming present and of dignifying particular identities.

Man, I wish I knew how to do it. In school we had to do it, but then I forgot.
