L'obvie et l'obtus by Roland Barthes is one of the books I had left here in the UK and that my former flatmate kept for me all these years. I was looking through it and see that I had underlined the following passage, which I want to share with you re: your question about drawing and photography...
"la dénotation du dessin est moins pure que la dénotation photographique, car il n'y a jamais de dessin sans style; enfin, comme tous le codes, le dessin exige un apprentisage (Saussure atribuait une grande importance à ce fait sémiologique). [...] la "facture" d'un dessin constitue déjà une connotation; mais en même temps, dans la mesure où le dessin affiche son codage, le rapport des deux messages se trouve profondément modifié; ce n'est plus le rapport d'une nature et d'une culture (comme dans le cas de la photographie), c'est le rapport de deux cultures; la "morale" du dessin n'est pas celle de la photographie."
